Karachi textile exporting units face gas shortage

According to Jawed Bilwani, Chairman PHMA, Karachi’s textile units, contributing 52 pc to Pakistan’s textile exports, are facing gas shortage. He said that the units are compelled to work six days a week for the last few years due to weekly one-day industrial gas holiday by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). The frequent low gas pressure now has aggravated the situation. Export production has been hurt badly as industries remained without gas for 4-13 hours during 14 days in December.

He also informed that as generators producing electricity are shutting down due to low gas pressure, causing faults in the machinery and electronic equipment and machinery programs get corrupt or damaged due to power fluctuation.

Mr Bilwani urged the government to direct SSGC to comply with government policies and supply gas to textile export industries on a priority basis.
