Readymade garment industries in Bangladesh fund Department of Labor to protect workers from unfair practices

From the department of Labor in Bangladesh, 30 officials have been trained on the principles and techniques of unfair labor investigation. The training is to protect workers against anti-union discrimination and unfair practices by building a standard operating procedure and its implementation.

The training took place under the promoting social dialogue and harmonious industrial relations in the ready-made garment industries project. The project is funded by Governments of Denmark and Sweden.

Mr. Shib Nath Roy, The Director General of the Department of Labor and Additional Secretary of the Government of Bangladesh said, “I want to stress the importance of the duties that you, investigators of unfair labor practices carry out. It is of vital importance both for the Bangladeshi workforce and employers to count on your support in order to safeguard their right to freedom of association.”

Furthermore, he urged the officials to operate with honesty, integrity, Impartiality and professionalism as well as develop tracking and reporting formats for the department.

ILO’s SDIR project assisted the Government of Bangladesh in developing the SOPs on anti-union discrimination and unfair labor practices. The SOP on Trade Union Registration introduces a standardized procedure with fixed steps and times that offer greater clarity and transparency to the process. Likewise, the SOP for Unfair Labor Practices includes a series of steps from the submission of a written complaint to the Department of Labor to ultimately cases being referred to the Labor Court.
