Skiboot uses carbon fiber, wins ISPO award

Every year in January, more than 2,560 international exhibitors present their latest products from the segments of Outdoor, Ski, Action, Performance Sports, Textile trends, Health & Fitness and Sourcing at ISPO Munich, Germany to over 81,000 visitors.

In 2015, the show highlighted a ne state-of-the-art application in Ski products: a prototype of the first 3D-printed skiboot.

The boot structure was made entirely from Windform SP, a milled carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide material used for laser sintering, which has gained significant applications in motorsports and aerospace. Windform SP has been developed by CRP Technology (CRP Group, Modena, Italy), a company which claims more than 20 years of experience in additive manufacturing and high-performance 3D printing.

Franz Egger, inventor of the EasyStand skiboot explains, “I wanted to find successful solutions for the manufacturer, for the sporting goods dealer and for the skier. My main aim is to bring back more skiers on the slopes (beginners and former skiers)”.
EasyStand’s patented innovation is reportedly in its use of 3D printing as the manufacturing process and three different skiboot insoles, each one higher in the front compared to the rear. This guarantees a much better fit in the heel and space for the toes to move more freely, which helps prevent freezing. The skier gets more pressure during initiation of turns and better grip, which enables safer skiing and less injuries. The skiboot features a split insole and an integrated wedge connected to a regulator. By adjusting the regulator it is possible to change the wedge into three different positions and thus change the height of the foot in the boot.

CRP Technology made the EasyStand skiboot structure using its Windform SP material, which is highly ductile with good mechanical and moisture resistance plus excellent sealing characteristics. It performs well in high stress fatigue and shock, its elasticity helping to absorb such mechanical stress. Windform SP also maintains its relevant characteristics even at low temperature, which is crucial for ski products.

ISPO Munich 2015 recognized the EasyStand 3D-printed skiboot with judges consisting of independent sports business professionals voting it the best in the Ski product category. The opens a new chapter in the application of 3D printing in the sporting goods industry.
