H&M is launching a new debut collection using vegan cactus leather

When the talk is about sustainability and innovation, H&M is often at the top of the list. This time, the brand collaborates with Desserto, The partnership will help create a safer environment for the planet and put Mexico at the global fashion industry center. The products under the collaboration will be part of Science Story, H&M collection.

This new collection will be part of the brand’s Innovation Stories concept, which showcases sustainable processes and will feature DESSERTO’s cactus leather. Created in Mexico, DESSERTO is a sustainable and cruelty-free alternative to traditional cowhide, made by drying mature leaves from the plant and converting them into pliable leather. This is not DESSERTO’s first venture into fashion, as back in December, sustainable shoemakers Clae created a collection of cactus leather sneakers entitled Bradley Cactus.

However, H&M’s Science Story collection will see DESSERTO in new territory. Its material will be used in clothing with key pieces, including bright white wide-leg jeans with a removable double waistband, a cropped collared shirt with an oversized breast pocket, and a cuffed tracksuit. These will be parnered with bold, dynamic accessories such as acid yellow block heels, chunky necklaces, and animal-free handbags.

Mexican entrepreneurs consider that Desserto has broken into the world of fashion and other industries because it is a quality alternative, attractive, sustainable, cruelty-free, free of toxic chemicals, Phthalates and PVC-free, whose use can contribute to reducing global pollution levels. A report from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) points out that fashion is one of the most damaging and polluting industries for the environment: textile production is responsible for 20 percent of global wastewater and 10 percent of the global carbon emissions.
