The Bangladesh Textile Manufacturers Association (BTMA) has called on the government to ease restrictions on the import of recyclable plastics to support the country’s textile and garment industries’ move towards sustainability.
In a recent appeal, BTMA emphasized the growing importance of incorporating eco-friendly materials into manufacturing processes, as well as reducing environmental impact in line with global sustainability goals.
Recyclable plastics, including PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and packaging materials, are in demand within the textile sector due to their potential for conversion into fibers for clothing and other products. The import of these materials, the BTMA argues, will enable local manufacturers to better compete in the international market, especially as international buyers increasingly prioritize environmentally conscious production practices.
Currently, strict regulations on plastic imports hinder the availability of recyclable materials in Bangladesh, despite a rising demand in the textile industry for eco-friendly alternatives. BTMA representatives assert that easing these restrictions will not only support the industry’s environmental initiatives but also promote economic growth through the creation of new jobs in recycling and sustainable manufacturing.
BTMA’s plea comes at a critical time when Bangladesh is striving to strengthen its position as a leader in the global textile and garment market, balancing growth with environmental responsibility.
