Iran’s reliance on Tajik cotton grew significantly in the first half of 2025, with imports rising 22.59 percent year-on-year to reach a value of US$49.67 million. The surge underscores Tajikistan’s growing role as a key supplier to Iran’s textile and apparel industry, which heavily depends on imported raw materials.
According to trade data, Tajikistan has maintained its position as one of Iran’s leading cotton exporters.
The rise in shipments is attributed to both increased demand from Iranian textile mills and a steady supply flow from Tajikistan, where cotton remains one of the top agricultural export products. With Iran aiming to boost domestic textile production, steady cotton imports are seen as crucial to maintaining growth momentum in the sector.
Industry experts point out that the increase in trade reflects broader regional cooperation between Iran and Tajikistan, as both nations have strengthened economic ties in recent years. Cotton continues to dominate Tajikistan’s agricultural export basket, and Iran’s role as a consistent buyer adds stability to this trade relationship.
The sharp import growth in early 2025 also highlights Iran’s ongoing challenge of balancing domestic production limitations with rising textile industry needs. By securing higher volumes from Tajikistan, Iran is ensuring raw material availability for yarn, fabric, and garment manufacturing.
Looking ahead, analysts expect cotton trade between the two countries to remain strong, provided that global price fluctuations and logistical challenges remain manageable.
