Impetus wins ISPO award for bio-engineered wool–lyocell tee

The ImNatura T-shirt shows how biotechnology can upgrade everyday apparel without adding cost or complexity.

Impetus has taken an unassuming wardrobe basic — the T-shirt — and turned it into a showcase of textile biotechnology. Its ImNatura Wool & Lyocell Tee, winner of an ISPO Award 2025, blends fine wool with renewable Lyocell to create a breathable, thermoregulating fabric with a smooth, premium feel. What sets the product apart is not the fibre blend alone, but the processing behind it: all preparation, dyeing and softening steps are carried out using No Petrol, a bio-based finishing platform that replaces petrochemical auxiliaries with biodegradable alternatives.

The No Petrol system integrates bio-preparation, bio-dyeing and bio-softening derived from microalgae and other renewable sources. The treatments cut CO₂ emissions, energy, water and processing time, while improving colour fastness and comfort. Impetus reports up to a 46% lower environmental impact for these stages compared with conventional methods — without requiring any change in machinery or production flow.

The approach offers a scalable route to lower-impact apparel. Bio-dyeing produces rich, stable colours; bio-softening delivers a naturally soft handle; and the wool–Lyocell blend ensures breathability and moisture management. For brands under pressure to reduce chemical dependency and environmental footprints, the technology presents a drop-in solution compatible with existing infrastructure.

At a retail price of €55.50 and launching for Autumn/Winter 2025, the ImNatura T-shirt positions biotechnology not as a niche experiment but as a commercially viable upgrade for mainstream apparel. As Ricardo Figueiredo, vice-president of Impetus Group, notes, the award validates the company’s
