The European Commission has initiated a public consultation to gather feedback on a proposed list of U.S. imports, valued at €95 billion ($107 billion), that may be subject to retaliatory tariffs. This move is in response to ongoing U.S. tariffs, particularly those imposed under President Donald Trump’s administration. The consultation aims to assess the potential impact of these measures on EU economic interests and to determine the final list of products for countermeasures.
The proposed countermeasures target a broad range of U.S. products, including aircraft, vehicle parts, chemicals, electrical equipment, health products, and machinery. The European Commission emphasizes its preference for a negotiated solution but is preparing for all outcomes. The public consultation is open until June 10, 2025, allowing stakeholders to submit their views and information.
In addition to the consultation, the European Commission plans to initiate a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the U.S. The EU contends that the U.S. tariffs violate international trade rules and are economically counterproductive. The Commission aims to defend a rules-based trading system and protect European businesses, workers, and consumers from unjustified measures.
The EU’s response underscores its commitment to free and fair trade and its readiness to take legal action to safeguard its economic interests. The outcome of the public consultation and the forthcoming WTO dispute will be pivotal in shaping the future of transatlantic trade relations.
