India’s cotton production estimated to drop to 7-year low in 2024-25

India’s cotton production for the 2024-25 season is expected to fall to a seven-year low, with estimates suggesting a decline of about 10-15% from the previous year. The country, which is the largest producer and consumer of cotton globally, is facing several challenges that are impacting yield. These include unfavorable weather conditions, inadequate rainfall in key cotton-growing states, and a rise in pest infestations.

The decrease in production is likely to put pressure on domestic supply and could lead to higher cotton prices. This could also affect India’s textile industry, which relies heavily on local cotton for its vast production needs. As a result, India may need to increase its cotton imports to meet demand.

Agriculture experts are calling for better crop management practices, improved irrigation techniques, and more government support to mitigate the impact of the crisis. Additionally, there are concerns about the long-term sustainability of cotton farming in the country due to climate change and water scarcity.

The drop in cotton production will have far-reaching effects on the agricultural and textile sectors, and stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation as the harvest season approaches.
