In their upcoming Fall-Winter 2022-2023 collection Ternua, the top Spanish outdoor brand in sustainability, has changed the name of their Spirit Outdoor line, with clothes for everyday use inspired by the brand’s history and their connection to the sea and mountains, to New Earth Spirit.
They’re clothes with their own identity made with environmentally friendly textiles, many of which come from unique projects driven by the brand, like Redcycle (recycling fishing nets), Seacycle (recycling sea plastic), Colorcycle (recycled from non-edible agricultural waste) and Latxa Artile (recycling wool native to the Basque Country). And, new this season, you can start to see clothes that are the outcome of new circular economy projects Ternua has participated in, like Wearcycle (textile waste turned into garments) and Sarebio (tuna fishing nets recycled after the end of their useful life).
The Ternua name and whale tail logo come from the history of Basque whalers who went to Newfoundland (Ternua in Basque) to hunt whales in the 15th century.
The brand’s founders took up the adventurous spirit and respect for other cultures the whalers had. But, they wanted to flip their history on its head by instead championing the protection of those animals and respect for the environment in both their activities within the textile industry and their CSR. For example, they adopted four whales through the WDC (Whales and Dolphins Conservation) association.
That union between the sea and the mountains, two strong symbols of identity for the Basque Country where the brand originated, and the twist given to the history of the whalers towards protecting nature with new ways of doing things and producing outdoor clothing are very present in the New Earth Spirit line.
It’s a line with pants, shirts, sweatshirts and jackets made with sustainable textiles and materials where the new sailor style sweaters really catch the eye.
It’s also important that the water repellent treatments used for the outside of the garments are PFC free. That means they don’t have any substances that are toxic for the environment. It’s a line for everyday life that tells the history of Ternua.
