Nutrition Facts Label has increased transparency in the food & beverage industries for over 30 years. The nutrition facts labels have been designed to encourage food companies to produce healthier food and help consumers make better choices. However, there are no such Facts Labels on the garments. Nisolo has now introduced Sustainability Facts Label, just like Nutrition Facts Labels, which will empower consumers to make better choices and invite brands like us to strengthen our approaches to sustainability.
With ten categories scored across People and Planet backed by 200 different public-facing data points, the Sustainability Facts Label (SFL) is the most comprehensive yet digestible evaluation tool the fashion industry has seen to date. The Sustainability Facts Label will help to eliminate the following lack of transparency areas:
People wise: Human rights abuses abound, and less than 5% of the 100M people making clothing worldwide are paid a living wage that covers their most basic needs. Nisolo SFL covers 92 data points that makeup people, including those commonly assessed by experts and entire categories such as Gender Equality and Healthcare & Benefit. Many assessments do not evaluate what we deem critical and urgent.
Planet wise: Fashion is a top 5 polluting industry responsible for up to 10% of the world’s carbon footprint, impacting climate change more than international shipping and aviation combined. Nisolo SFL has 108 data points that make up Planet, including those commonly assessed by experts and criteria such as Durability within Raw Materials Integrity and Post Use Product Lifecycle. Many assessments do not evaluate but deem critical and urgent.
Greenwashing: In fashion, pursuing only the most marketable ‘green’ initiative to push on shoppers (while conveniently ignoring everything else) has sadly become the norm.
