64000 apparel workers laid off in Indonesia

There is panic among Indonesian clothing workers as the layoffs are increasing every day. More than 64000 workers have been shown the door in the past 5 weeks.

Chairman of the West Java Province Textile Product Entrepreneurs Association (PPTPJB) Yan Mei in a virtual press conference revealed that in last said two weeks ago, there have been reports from 14 regencies and cities in West Java regarding termination of employment or layoffs from a number of textile companies.

He said the drop in exports while imported clothing eats away at its domestic market share. He said of the 124 companies affected about 10000 workers lost their jobs because of the closure of 18 garment units in Java.

Over 54000 workers were laid off by 114 companies because of a sharp decline in orders.



Suppliers for some of the world’s most prominent apparel brands, such as Nike and Victoria’s Secret, were affected.

The PPTPJB expects further layoffs as it gathers statistics from other regions. It expects the layoffs to continue until next year because of the global recession

The PPTPJB revealed that the smaller companies have been devastated due to the current decline in orders. The larger enterprises like Nike and Victoria Street have also seen a drop in export orders of 40 to 50 percent.
