China’s textile & garment sector accounts for 2.8% of overall carbon emission

Carbon emissions from China’s textile and garment sector stood at around 230 million metric tons per year and accounted for just 2.8 percent of overall industrial emissions.

“Compared with other industries, the volume is not high,” the China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) said while releasing its progress report on reducing emissions from the industry.

CNTAC released the report on the third anniversary on the day; China had proposed its dual carbon goals.

The council said it would further contribute to reducing carbon emissions and meeting the goals by guiding the industry by exploring paths of sustainable production.

“This would help the green transformation of the Chinese textile and clothing industry,” CNTAC observed.

“China has set the goals of realizing carbon neutrality before 2060 and as the biggest exporter and consumer of textiles and garments; the industry should take the lead in reducing emissions,” CNTAC noted.





To achieve the industry’s carbon reduction goals, CNTAC will guide most companies involved in the sector to actively take action to reduce carbon emissions.

The council will work towards reducing carbon emissions between 2026 and 2030, through carbon trading mechanisms.
