Cambodian garment workers wages increased by $4 per month

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has announced an increase in monthly wages of workers working in the textile, garment and footwear industry and will come in to effect beginning from 2024.

The wages will be raised by US per month, which will help monthly wages reach 4 from the existing 0 per month currently.

“I will continue to urge the relevant ministries, institutions, authorities to monitor and put in place additional measures to examine the possibility of reducing the cost burden of workers,” Manet stated.

“We will also have a meeting with garment factories to improve the investment and business environment and attract more investment and create new jobs for people,” the PM added.

A survey titled, ‘Stitched Under Strain’ conducted by Action Aid Cambodia had recently revealed that the women workers working in the garment factories were getting caught in a debt trap.

The women who were surveyed said they had to take high interest loans of up to 20 percent, because their wages have dropped since the pandemic began and are earning now less than in 2020.
