North American transborder freight reached $131.6 billion in February 2025, marking a 2.1% increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. This growth reflects steady demand across various transportation modes.
Trade between the U.S. and Canada totaled $63.2 billion, up 2.2% year-over-year, while U.S.-Mexico trade amounted to $68.4 billion, a 2.0% rise. Trucks continued to dominate, transporting $86.6 billion worth of goods, a 3.9% increase from the previous year.
Pipelines saw a significant surge, up 23.1% to $10.0 billion, and air freight rose 4.8% to $4.8 billion. Conversely, rail shipments declined 11.7% to $15.1 billion, and vessel trade fell 22.9% to $7.7 billion.
Detroit, Port Huron, and Buffalo remained the top truck ports for trade with Canada, while Laredo, El Paso, and Otay Mesa led on the southern border.
For rail, Detroit, Port Huron, and Buffalo were the primary hubs. These trends underscore the ongoing shifts in North American logistics dynamics, with land-based transportation maintaining its prominence.
