Brazil’s cotton exports hold steady, Pakistan rises as top destination

Brazil’s cotton export performance in 2025 is showing a shift in global demand patterns. From January to July, the country’s total exports remained broadly steady compared to the same period last year. However, behind this stable figure lies a major reshuffle in destination markets, with Pakistan emerging as the top buyer of Brazilian cotton.

Pakistan’s imports of Brazilian cotton more than doubled during the first seven months of the year, capturing around 7.18 percent of total shipments. This surge is being driven by Pakistan’s textile and apparel industry, which has faced challenges from inconsistent domestic cotton output. The country’s spinning mills and garment exporters are increasingly leaning on Brazilian supplies to maintain production stability and meet export orders.

In contrast, China’s role as a leading destination has weakened considerably. Once the largest buyer of Brazilian cotton, China’s share fell to about 9.17 percent, reflecting reduced demand from its textile sector. Factors behind the decline include slower industrial activity, shifts in sourcing strategies, and a more cautious approach to global fiber imports.

Other consistent markets for Brazilian cotton such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Turkey also maintained their import levels, though none recorded growth comparable to Pakistan. This shift highlights how South Asia, particularly Pakistan, is emerging as a key hub in global cotton demand, while China’s dominance is showing signs of decline.

Although Brazil’s overall export volumes have not shown major changes, the redistribution among key partners underscores evolving trade dynamics. The rise of Pakistan as a central market signals not only the growing importance of its textile industry but also Brazil’s adaptability in tapping new and strengthening demand across Asia.
