Australian cotton trade delegation visits Vietnam

An Australian cotton trade delegation visited Vietnam last week to launch a series of activities in various cities to strengthen the relationship between Vietnamese textile manufacturers and Australian cotton producers.

The delegation compromising of Australian Cotton Shippers Association (ACSA) and Cotton Australia members, paid visits to various textile mills and addressed seminars in HCM City, Hue, and Hanoi.

The seminars provided an overview of the Australian cotton industry, updates on the 2023 season, and the broader cotton market.

The visit also provided an opportunity for the delegation to deepen its knowledge of the Vietnam textile industry, while informing the textile industry on Australian cotton supply chains and sustainability practices.

“The Australian cotton industry wants to build deeper relationships with the local textile and apparel industry as demand is anticipated to grow in the coming years,” Rob Cairns, Export Marketing Consultant of ACSA said.

“This trip is the first of its kind with ACSA and Cotton Australia joined by brands and CSIRO researchers to deliver the story of the complete package about why Australian cotton should be the fiber of choice for the textile industry in Vietnam,” Carins stated.

“In 2022, Vietnam was the largest export market for Australian cotton, with a 38.8 percent market share and current trends indicate Vietnam will remain one of its largest export markets for Australian cotton,” Rebecca Ball, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade, said.

Between 2020 and 2022, Australia’s exports of cotton to Vietnam rose from just AU $78 million to an astounding $1.69 billion.

Key supply factors such as favorable weather conditions, increased national crop, premium quality, proven sustainability track record, competitive prices, and proximity are key advantages that have buoyed Australian cotton exports to Vietnam.

The Australian Cotton trade delegation also included representatives of garment brands and retailers like Sportscraft, Struddys, Big W, AS Colour, Modibodi, Workwear Group, New Romantic, and Michell Wool.
