Bangladesh garment sector reaches milestone of 200 LEED factories

The Bangladesh apparel sector touched an important milestone of reaching 200 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified green factories.

30 garment plants received LEED certification in 2022 of which 15 were Platinum and 15 Gold, while 18 factories have been LEED certified in 2023 of which 13 were Platinum and five were Gold.

LEED certification is given by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and the LEED certification is internationally recognised as a symbol of excellence in sustainable building practices.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan said, “I feel glad to mention that the number of LEED-certified garment factories in Bangladesh has reached 200.”

“Of these 200, 73 are Platinum, 113 Gold, 10 Silver, and 4 are certified factories and Bangladesh has 13 out of the global top 15 LEED green factories,” the BGMEA President noted.

“Attaining the milestone of 200 LEED green factories, stands as a testament to Bangladesh’s resolve in fostering a more sustainable and prosperous future,” Hassan added.

To receive the LEED certification, factories are required to maintain the highest standards with regards to carbon emission, energy and water usage, waste management, indoor environmental quality among other things, under the strict supervision of the USGBC.

These certified green factories adhere to stringent standards, demonstrating a harmonious blend of cutting-edge technologies and eco-conscious practices that prioritise resource efficiency, environmental conservation, and worker well-being.
