An investigation was launched last week when accusations arose against Boohoo claiming that the workers were being severely underpaid and forced to do 24 hour shifts in the Pakistani factories.
The two factories located in the industrial area of Faisalabad hosted workers that were being paid 29pc per hour. The workers asserted that their total monthly wage came up to 10,000 rupees which is definitely less than the legal monthly wage. Minimum wage set by the government for an unskilled labor is 17,500PKR.
Diving deep into the investigation and procuring the visual proof such as video and photographic evidence also sheds light on the carelessness for the safety precautions which included parking motorbikes next to flammable materials. After acknowledging the report, Boohoo has cut ties with a supplier, JD Fashion Ltd, and a factory, AH Fashion.
They are themselves investigating the accusations while suspending the supply chain.
Mahmud Kamani, Boohoo co-founder and executive chairman said would “fix whatever’s gone wrong” at his fast-fashion empire. An agenda for Change programme has been layed down by Boohoo which sets out six steps to enhance its supplier audit and compliance procedures.
“We have made some mistakes but over the last 14 years we’ve got more right than wrong and we have a very very fast-growing business,” Kamani said while giving evidence to parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee as part of its investigation into the fashion industry.
“I’m determined to fix whatever’s gone wrong and I understand things have gone wrong because of the fast-growing nature of this business,” he said.
Boohoo also made the committee aware about cutting ties with with 64 Leicester suppliers and factories since late 2019 after finding violations of its code of conduct.
