China has announced it will no longer seek special treatment typically granted to developing countries in future World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations.
The move, revealed by Premier Li Qiang during a recent international development forum, marks a significant shift in China’s trade policy and signals a commitment to supporting global trade reforms.
Under current WTO rules, developing nations are allowed certain flexibilities—known as Special and Differential Treatment (SDT)—which include longer timelines for implementing agreements and protection for emerging industries. While China will continue to retain its formal status as a developing country, it will voluntarily forgo these benefits in future trade negotiations.
The decision has been welcomed by WTO leadership, who view it as a meaningful step toward restoring confidence in the multilateral trade system. It also comes amid ongoing criticism—especially from developed economies like the United States—that China, as the world’s second-largest economy, should not be claiming advantages meant for less-developed nations.
Chinese officials emphasized that the move reflects China’s commitment to fair trade, global cooperation, and multilateralism. They also stated that the decision is part of a broader effort to strengthen the role of the WTO and enhance trust among member nations.
Although this change applies only to future negotiations and not existing WTO agreements, it could influence other emerging economies to reconsider their positions and contribute to reshaping the global trade landscape.
Analysts see this as a strategic diplomatic gesture that could reduce trade tensions and bolster China’s image as a responsible global player.
