EU reaches provisional deal on textile waste rules – A major step toward sustainable fashion

The European Union has just secured a provisional deal to address textile waste, marking a significant step in transforming the fashion industry into a more sustainable and circular model. This agreement, part of the revised Waste Framework Directive, focuses on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which will require fashion brands and textile producers to take responsibility for the waste their products generate.

Here are the key highlights of the deal:
1. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Textile producers will now be held accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products. This includes ensuring that clothes can be reused, recycled, or properly disposed of once they are no longer needed, which could involve financing the collection and recycling of used textiles.

2. Sustainability Fees: Companies will pay fees depending on the sustainability of their products. This system incentivizes brands to produce long-lasting, recyclable, and eco-friendly garments, pushing the fashion industry towards circularity.

3. Mandatory Textile Waste Collection: By 2025, member states will be required to set up separate collection schemes for textile waste, facilitating higher recycling rates and reducing the environmental burden.

4. Microenterprise Considerations: Small businesses and microenterprises will be given additional time to adjust to the new rules, ensuring a fair transition period.

5. Targeted Waste Reduction: The EU aims to drastically reduce textile waste by promoting eco-design and encouraging sustainable production practices, contributing to the European Green Deal’s goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

This agreement is a major win for sustainable fashion, pushing the industry towards circularity, eco-friendly practices, and a reduction in textile waste. Once finalized, EU member states will have 20 months to implement the new measures.
