Heavy rains may affect cotton quality in China’s Xinjiang region

Very heavy rains in China’s top cotton-producing region, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region may lead to low-quality of cotton, while harvesting could also be delayed.

“The rains in August have been 50 percent more than usual in Xinjiang region, which may lead to a decrease in the quality of cotton and harvesting of the crops may be delayed,” Jia Xiaolong, deputy director of the National Climate Center said.

The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region produces about 20 percent of global cotton production and accounts for 90 percent of China’s cotton output.

The US Department of Agriculture in its August report has reduced its forecast for China’s 2023-24 cotton production to 5.9 million tons.
