Indonesian textile & garment sector challenges to continue into 2024

The Indonesian textile and garment industry will continue to face serious challenges until the end of 2024, the Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) said. “These challenges include weak export demand and flooding of textile and apparel into the domestic markets,” API Chairman Jemmy Kartiwa Sastraatmaja said at a press conference.

“Weak export demand is mainly due to a slowdown in demand from main export markets, influenced by high inflation and low purchasing power, which has not yet recovered,” he added. “New economic growth projections are predicted to emerge in early 2025, but 2024 will continue to be a tough year not for just Indonesia but also for its competitors,” Sastraatmaja stated.

The API Chairman welcomed the move of the Indonesian government to check illegal imports of textiles and apparel through a post-border policy. He further added that this step will provide support for the growth of the textile industry to fully utilize its production capacity and avoid retrenching workers.
