CITEVE, the Portuguese technology center for textile and clothing in Portugal, has developed a process for
turning natural leather waste and by-products from the tanning industry into new textile coatings. The process
involves the large-scale chemical transformation of leather trimmings and EPA waste into a solution with which
it is possible to manufacture coatings for vehicle interiors.
CITEVE's mission is to support the technical and technological development of the textile & clothing industry,
promoting innovation and inducing new capacities and competencies, as well as helping define
industrial and public policies.
Leather products are popular globally as fashion and other items. In 2020, Leather Waste was the world's
1200th most traded product, with a total trade of $32.8M. Between 2019 and 2020, the exports of Leather
Waste decreased by -20.7%, from $41.4M to $32.8M. Trade in Leather Waste represents 0.0002% of total world
trade. Leather has the most significant impact on eutrophication, an severe ecological problem in which runoff
waste creates an overgrowth of plant life in water systems, which suffocates animals by depleting oxygen levels
