Pakistan has 36 green apparel factories as against 202 in Bangladesh

The United States garment industry has the highest number of certified green clothing factories in the world which stands at 216, as against Pakistan which has 36.

Bangladesh takes second place with 202 certified green apparel factories, while the closest Bangladeshi competitor Vietnam has 69 green factories.

China which is the number one global apparel exporter has 173 green factories. Mexico has 77, Taiwan and India with 49 each, Turkey with 43 and Sri Lanka with 32.

Bangladesh which is the second biggest clothing exporter totaling to $45 billion and a global market share of 7.9 percent, has taken lead in limiting environmental impacts and carbon emission.

The global fashion industry is responsible for 10 percent of carbon emissions yearly and if the current pace of greenhouse gas emissions continues, it will heave by more than 50 percent by 2030.

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) has set a target to reduce 45 percent of emissions by 2030 to help limit global warming to 1.5° celsius.

A green factory is equipped with design and production processes that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit environmental pollution and energy use.
