Soorty in partnership with WWF Pakistan launches organic cotton initiative in Balochistan

Soorty is Pakistan’s largest vertically integrated denim company and they have gotten in a partnership Collab with WWF Pakistan along with Department of Agriculture Extension, Balochistan, along with support and input from the Laudes Foundation to inaugurate an organic cotton initiative.

Soorty clarifies in a statement that the goal of the The Soorty Organic Cotton Initiative (SOCI) is to initiate an “organic cotton revolution” to cater to those buyers that believe in utilizing products that were sourced ethically.

As people of Baluchistan in the rural region depend wholly on agriculture to earn their livelihood, therefore the first project will be set up in the region of Nall, a sub-division of Khuzdar District of Balochistan, almost 300 kilometres from the provincial capital, Quetta City. Its organic initiative will bring an area of approximately 7,000 acres under organic cultivation producing over 17,000 metric tons of seed cotton and 6,000 metric tons of cotton lint over the next four years.

Moreover, consumer demand now focuses more on knowing how the products are sourced therefore, the focus is on developing blockchain-oriented transparency, tracking and traceability of all its organic cotton along with rigorous and frequent GMO testing at every step of the chain to maintain the factor of openness and honesty of The Soorty Organic Cotton Initiative.

Lastly to sum it up, through the SOCI, the livelihoods of the thousands of people residing in the rural side, those in the farming communities will be improved but this will also provide a window for education and health services that will be provided to the underprivileged locals to improve their living conditions.
