From robotic fabric handling and self-adjusting sewing to AI-generated work orders, Korean manufacturers are moving automation from design offices onto the factory floor as labour shortages intensify.
South Korea’s apparel industry is accelerating the use of AI, robotics and production data systems to automate labour-intensive operations including pattern development, sewing, material handling and quality inspection.
Major exporter Hansae has contracted Korean robotics company Realworld and is evaluating its AI-enabled robotic gripping technology for apparel production. Hansae is also conducting proof-of-concept trials with CAPlanet on software that automatically converts a base garment pattern into multiple sizes.
Sewing becomes the next automation frontier
The developments are significant because handling flexible fabric remains one of apparel automation’s hardest engineering problems.
Uniform producer Bokwang INT is deploying AI that measures fabric thickness and tension in real time and adjusts sewing parameters accordingly. The system is also being developed to detect small surface defects, reducing dependence on individual operator skill for sewing consistency and inspection.
Meanwhile, Korean Friends is developing generative-AI technology that converts garment designs directly into production work orders. Georim Trend, F&I Korea and Good Trust are working with AI specialist SIJE to analyse sewing-machine and workload data and identify production bottlenecks.
Government targets factory-wide AI
The push fits Korea’s broader Manufacturing AI Transformation, or M.AX, strategy. The government wants AI to extend beyond individual machines into production planning, inventory, supply chains and factory management.
Apparel Views reports that Korea is preparing a 310 billion won ($222 million) High-Tech Future Textiles Development Program for 2028–2034, covering AI applications from spinning and yarn production through dyeing, processing and sewing. Around 200 companies reportedly responded to an initial industry-demand survey.
Labour economics drive the shift
For apparel manufacturers, the strategic issue is not simply replacing workers. AI-assisted sewing, robotic handling and automatic process setting could reduce skill dependency, variability, changeover time and the economics of small production runs.
Korea therefore offers an important test for other textile-export economies: if automation substantially reduces labour content per garment, competitiveness may increasingly depend on technology, engineering capability and response speed rather than wages alone. The figures to watch next are productivity gains, defect reductions, capex payback and whether robotic fabric handling progresses from trials into full-scale sewing lines.
