Textile industry: Official concerned over likely increase in tax

The govt. on one side is planning to raise the cost of doing business and on the other hand has announced an economic relief package for export oriented industries.

Mr Rizwan Ashraf, APTMA Chairman lamented that for the textile industry the govt. was planning to raise tax rate on usage of underground water which was being utilized as raw material. Quoting figures, he revealed that the textile industry had a 6% share in the country’s GDP and a 58% share in total exports. He also underlined that the sector has been paying water bills regularly.

He informed, “Every textile industry pays Rs13,000 per cusec of water monthly. A small industrial unit consumes two to three cusecs of water monthly while the big ones utilize roughly 20 cusecs.”
