Levi’s and 170 other companies advise EU to set aggressive sustainability goals

Levi’s and 170 other companies are calling on the European Union to establish more striving environmental goals. The companies recently signed an open letter urging the EU heads of state and the European Commission to set an EU 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target of at least 55 percent, putting the continent on track to becoming climate-neutral by 2050.

Levi Strauss & Co. is an American clothing company known worldwide for its Levi’s denim jeans brand. It was founded in May 1853 when German immigrant Levi Strauss moved from Buttenheim, Bavaria, to San Francisco, California, to open a west coast branch of his brothers’ New York dry goods business. The company is already known for its sustainability efforts.

Jeffery Hogue, Chief Sustainability Officer, Levi Strauss & Co, said, “The planet cannot afford for progress to take a backseat right now. As per the United Nations, global carbon dioxide emissions need to fall by 45 percent until 2030 to reach net-zero by 2050.

Levi’s also plans to improve its supply chain performance, which makes up 63 percent of its overall carbon footprint. The company also pledged to reduce supply chain emissions by 40 percent by 2025. The goal will achieve by establishing new targets for suppliers and expanding its partnership with the International Finance Corporation; a global development institution focused on the private sector in developing countries.
