A new collaboration between Loop Industries, Hyosung, and the sustainable fashion brand Pleatsmama is transforming mixed PET waste into premium products.
The partnership focuses on creating 100% recycled draw textured yarns, used to produce limited-edition handbags. The polyester yarns are made using Loop’s Infinite Loop technology, which recycles low-value polyester textile waste into virgin-quality polyester.
This technology is vital in closing the loop in the textile industry, providing a solution to the high levels of textile waste, particularly polyester, which is often incinerated or landfilled.
The partnership highlights the potential for circular fashion, where even low-value waste can be repurposed into valuable materials. Hyosung spins the yarn, while Pleatsmama designs and manufactures the handbags. This collaboration underscores the environmental benefits of recycling technologies, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% and using significantly less non-renewable energy compared to traditional polyester production.
Loop’s technology depolymerizes PET plastics and polyester fibers from various sources, including plastic bottles, packaging, and even ocean plastics, returning them to their base monomers. These monomers are then used to create high-quality polyester suitable for various applications. This process offers a closed-loop solution, ensuring that recycled polyester maintains its quality and can be reused indefinitely, supporting sustainability efforts across industries.
