Alan McClay, CEO of Better Cotton since 2015, is stepping down after nearly a decade of impactful leadership. During his time at the helm, Better Cotton evolved into the world’s largest sustainability initiative for cotton, working with farmers, brands, and stakeholders across the supply chain to drive measurable improvements in cotton production and livelihoods.
In a farewell message shared at the 2025 Better Cotton Conference, McClay reflected on the organisation’s journey and its future:“
“I leave knowing this organisation is going to continue to drive change for the good of cotton, for the good of the people who grow it, and for the planet.”
McClay’s tenure was marked by strong global expansion, increased traceability, and a firm commitment to sustainability. His leadership helped strengthen partnerships, expand farmer training programmes, and promote climate-resilient farming practices.
Before his departure, McClay contributed an Op-Ed in Sourcing Journal, where he emphasised the urgency of sustainable practices and the evolving role of cotton in a changing global economy.
Better Cotton has announced that Nick Weatherill will take over as CEO. Weatherill brings experience in sustainability and ethical trade, most recently serving as Executive Director of the Ethical Trading Initiative. McClay and Weatherill will work together over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.
McClay departs with the respect of industry stakeholders and leaves behind a strong foundation for the next chapter of Better Cotton’s mission to make sustainable cotton the norm.
