Mexico denounces U.S. 30 % tariffs as “unfair,” EU reaffirms negotiations ahead of deadline

In a bold escalation of trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled plans to impose 30 % tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico, effective August 1, 2025. The announcement, shared via letters on his Truth Social platform, cited concerns over persistent trade imbalances and Mexico’s role in facilitating drug trafficking.

Mexico’s Response
Mexico’s economy and foreign affairs ministries immediately condemned the move as an “unfair deal,” stating their non‑agreement at talks and vowing to safeguard national sovereignty. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed cautious optimism, saying that ongoing negotiations could yield a better arrangement before tariffs take effect.

EU Reaction
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that the tariffs would disrupt transatlantic supply chains to the detriment of businesses, consumers, and patients. She emphasized the EU’s preference for a negotiated deal by the August deadline but affirmed readiness to implement “proportionate countermeasures,” with a retaliatory package valued at around €21 billion currently suspended.

European and global leaders echoed these sentiments. French President Emmanuel Macron urged the EU to “resolutely defend European interests” and prepare credible countermeasures. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Germany’s Economy Minister Katherina Reiche emphasized that unjustified tariffs damage openness and economic growth.

Looking Ahead
EU diplomats are convening in Brussels for an emergency session to chart the bloc’s next steps, with additional EU-US trade discussions on tap in coming weeks. Mexico is exploring continued negotiations to protect cross-border commerce and employment. With little over two weeks before the tariffs take effect, global markets watch closely whether diplomatic pressure can avert a full-scale trade confrontation.
