German discounter Aldi recently announced introducing the 'Grüner Knopf' (Green Button) seal to label sustainable textile.

Aldi, German discounter has announced the launch of ‘Grüner Knopf’ (Green Button) seal to label sustainable textile. The retailer is now offering baby tights and baby socks made of fabric with the Grüner Knopf certification. The seal will be gradually added to other products as they meet all the 26 social and ecological standards outlined.

Mr Rayk Mende, Managing Director of corporate responsibility and quality assurance said, “We have been committed for many years to improving the social, economic and environmental conditions in the textile supply chain. With the Grüner Knopf, we give our customers an additional orientation when shopping.”

To acquire the seal, participating companies are required to demonstrate compliance based on these standards, which are constantly being developed.

The German federal ministry for economic cooperation and development (BMZ) is in charge of this certification introduced this month and will evaluate companies and its products.
