The ready-made garment sector of Bangladesh is well ahead of its competitors in obtaining green manufacturing certificates from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The green certification gives them an added advantage in obtaining orders from environment-conscious buyers.
The USGBC which had already certified 178 factories as green has recognized two more readymade garment factories as green. This has raised the total number of environment-friendly establishments in the RMG to 180.
The two new factories that have been approved as green include Victoria Intimates Ltd, in Boiragirchala, Dhaka, and Dresden Textiles Ltd in Trishal, Mymensingh. Both received gold ratings.
The certification is classified as platinum, gold, and silver based on the level of environmentally friendly measures they have adopted in their factories. Currently, 58 of its factories have been approved in the platinum category. Gold rates factories number 108 and silver rating has been awarded to 10 factories. Four companies have also been approved as green but they need to take more measures to qualify in the platinum, gold, or silver categories.
Numerous RMG units are at different stages of qualifying for green certification. The criteria for certification are based on energy water and waste management and transformation performance.
