Cotton recycling takes center stage at Singapore

Cotton recycling is set to take center stage at an upcoming textile machinery exhibition in Singapore, ITMA ASIA, highlighting the industry’s growing commitment to sustainability. The event will showcase advanced technologies designed to improve the processing and reuse of cotton waste, addressing both environmental concerns and supply chain challenges.

Recycling cotton presents several hurdles, including shorter fibre lengths, dust contamination, and inconsistent input quality. These factors reduce the performance of recycled yarns and limit their commercial use. However, machinery manufacturers are rising to the challenge with innovative solutions.

Leading companies such as Rieter, Saurer, and Trützschler are introducing new machinery and modifications specifically designed for recycled fibres. Technologies on display will include upgraded rotor and ring spinning systems, multi-stage fibre opening units, and selective cleaning equipment. These systems aim to maximize fibre recovery while ensuring better yarn quality.

Automation and real-time quality monitoring are also key features in the latest machines, helping mills manage the variability in recycled inputs. While the fundamental limitations of short cotton fibres remain, technological improvements are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in textile recycling.

The emphasis on cotton recycling is being driven by increasing consumer demand, stricter environmental regulations, and a global shift towards circular fashion. Industry stakeholders view this as a major opportunity to reduce textile waste and promote more sustainable production models.

The Singapore show will serve as a critical platform for global machinery makers and textile manufacturers to collaborate, innovate, and pave the way for a greener future in the cotton industry.
