EU wants to limit ‘fast-fashion’ imports

The climate change that saw historical high temperatures across Europe has forced the European Commission to more quickly to reduce pollutants that are added every year in the continent. Textile waste disposal has emerged as a major issue in this regard.

Textile consumption is a major negatively affected factor within the Union, after water and land use. Moreover, it’s fourth most detrimental factor on the environment and climate change at large. The EU Commission desires a sustainable strategy for its members by 2030 to divert textiles from shelves and closets of the consumers for recycling and reuse. EU studies reveal that clothing is usually discarded after 10 times wearing.

It is proposed that by 2030 all textiles marketed in EU markets must be durable and recyclable. Clothing must be made from eco friendly fibers: that are recycled fibers and are free of harmful compounds and produced with environmental and social rights in mind, said an official of the EU.

The flow of fast textile production chains into the EU would be checked and reduced because fast fashion products are mostly made from lower quality and have a higher environmental impact, the official said.

Sources told to TEXtalks International that the EU has set goals to reduce the number of collections per year. The EU will act to minimize one’s carbon and environmental footprint. Social compliance issues like child or forced labor from exporting countries would be checked.

It would be ensured that the textile waste to be exported from the OECD, the world’s richest economies, should only be done if the destination country notifies the Commission that it is willing to accept the waste and can handle it responsibly. After experimentation in Estonia, it has been established how textile sorting works and how old textiles could be recycled into new.

Pakistan’s apparel exporters have a large client base in Europe. They must become fully compliant with new EU conditions to be eligible for orders. They must also start importing the recycled waste from the EU before it is bookedits competitors.
