Freudenberg performance materials introduces an elastic super-absorbent wound dressing

This year at the Compamed in Düsseldorf, Freudenberg is debuting the elastic super absorbers for modern wound dressings that can increase the comfort level for patients and enable longer wear time, thus reducing the frequency of dressing changes. Freudenberg uses new technology to manufacture elastic superabsorbers. Unlike other processes, this does not require perforation or slitting of the material, which results in a high degree of constant elasticity. In addition, Freudenberg technology better binds the superabsorbent fibers into the material.

Exuding wounds are notoriously difficult to manage effectively, as there are many factors to consider when choosing the appropriate dressing. The presence of exudate becomes problematic when the volumes of exudate become unmanageable and when the content of the exudate changes. When the quantity of exudate is not being managed effectively, this can lead to problems such as peri-wound skin maceration, delayed healing, odor, infection, and the requirement of increased dressing changes.

Thus, the new dressing by Freudenberg Performance Materials could benefit exudating wounds. It is believed that effective exudate management, using the appropriate dressing for the type of wound and its stage of healing, will help to reduce the time to healing of a wound, prevent infection, reduce peri-wound skin maceration, reduce costs (by reducing the number of dressing changes and staffing), and improve the patient’s quality of life.
