India Surpasses China as Fastest-Growing Market for Italian Textile Machinery

Trade data from ACIMIT reveals shifting dynamics in Asia’s textile manufacturing landscape.

India has emerged as the fastest-growing market for Italian textile machinery in 2025, with exports reaching €78 million in the first half of the year — a 51% increase compared with the same period in 2024, according to data from ACIMIT, Italy’s textile machinery association. This surge places India almost on par with China, traditionally Italy’s largest market.

By contrast, Italian machinery exports to China fell 51% over the same period, also totalling €78 million, down from €206 million in 2024. In 2024, Italy’s exports to India had been €132 million, 14% lower than in 2023, highlighting how sharply the market has rebounded.

Other Asian markets also show strong momentum. Exports to Pakistan rose 41% to €33 million, Vietnam climbed 22% to €14 million, and UAE increased 25% to €6 million. However, Turkey, once Italy’s third-largest buyer with €132 million in imports in 2024, has dropped out of the top ten as its textile sector faces a deep downturn.

The Istanbul Apparel Exporters’ Association (İHKİB) reports Turkey’s industry has lost 350,000 jobs and nearly $8 billion in export revenues over the past three years amid currency volatility, high energy costs, and weakening European demand.

More than 100 Italian machinery firms showcased their technologies at ITMA ASIA + CITME Singapore 2025, underscoring Italy’s continued commitment to Asian markets. “Despite geopolitical uncertainties, our industry remains dynamic and forward-looking,” said ACIMIT President Marco Salvadè, emphasizing Italy’s blend of craftsmanship and innovation in serving the evolving textile value chain.
