India-UAE trade pact may benefit $26 billion

The comprehensive free trade agreement between India and the UAE will likely benefit about USD 26 billion
worth of domestic products. Labor-intensive industries such as textiles, leather, footwear, sports goods,
plastics, furniture, agricultural and wood products, engineering, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and
automobiles would gain substantially from the pact. The services sector segments that would significantly
boost the pact include computer-related services, audio-visual, education, health, tourism, travel, nursing,
engineering, and accountancy.

Under the agreement, the UAE is offering overall duty elimination on over 97% of its tariff lines (or products)
corresponding to 99% of India's exports in value terms. Besides, there is a separate exclusion list for some
products to protect the domestic industry, and goods in that list would remain out of the ambit of the pact.
The tariff rate Quotas (TRQs) offered by India to the UAE on certain items of its export interest will only be
reviewed after ten years. According to the Ministry of Commerce, the UAE is already one of the top five
destinations for Indian textile and clothing exports, including the US, Bangladesh, UK, and Germany.
