ZARA collaborates with Biotech
company for an eco-friendly collection
Zara has partnered with biotechnology company LanzaTech to launch a limited line of black dresses made
from carbon emissions. LanzaTech's biological process captures and converts steel mill emissions that would
otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. The company claims the Zara capsule collec-
tion of black dresses marks the first clothing to come to market made from carbon waste. Zara SA, stylized as
ZARA, is a Spanish apparel retailer based in Arteixo, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. The company specializes in
fast fashion, including clothing, accessories, shoes, swimwear, beauty, and perfumes. It is the largest compa-
ny in the Inditex group, its largest apparel retailer.
LanzaTech recycles the steel mill emissions into Lanzanol (ethanol) through a fermentation process. The
Lanzanol is then converted into low carbon mono-ethylene glycol by India Glycols Limited, which is then
converted into low carbon polyester yarn. This yarn has been used to fabricate a Zara capsule collection of
party dresses. Beyond industrial emissions, LanzaTech converts different feedstocks, including agricultural or
household waste, into ethanol through a fermentation process much like beer or wine, only using waste
carbon from sugars and microbes instead of yeast.
