Japanese sportswear company ASICS aims to expand in the Indian market

Indian consumers are becoming more health conscious as it’s over 300 million middle class realizes the importance of exercise and running which Japanese sportswear brand ASICS wants to exploit and improve its sales.

A spokesman of the company revealed that there are 100 million runners in India that regularly go out to remain fit. This is equivalent to the total population of Japan. He said besides running sportswear there is also a sizable market in the country for tennis and cricket wear.

The company expects India to be the fastest-growing market for ASICS products in Southeast Asia. It is currently ranked fourth in India in sportswear sales. The ASICS representative said the company entered the Indian market in 2015 while other players in this field are there for decades. He said the size of the Indian market and its robust economy speak about its potential.

ASICS is currently manufacturing apparel and footwear locally in India of which 25 percent of its sales revenue comes from India. The rest is exported. The company is aiming to take the local sales of its products to 30 percent in the next two years.
