Ovar, a Portugal-based company, has successfully created “non-woven tissue” (TNT) that kills different viruses in just 15 minutes. The product has been innovated in partnership with an international laboratory, a film (TNT, as it is also said in the sector) that has incorporated an antimicrobial agent that kills bacteria and viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.
According to a source from Elastictek, “The tests carried out in an independent level III laboratory point to the solution’s effectiveness by deactivating 99.99% of viral activity in 15 minutes”. In addition to inactivating the virus, this material is also recyclable. This was one of the priorities of the company that employs 70 employees.
Cesar Araujo of the National Association of Clothing and Apparel Industries (ANIVEC) considers that these new non-woven fabrics with associated high technology are another step for Portugal and Europe to stop being hostage and dependent on Asian products.
Mario Jorge Machado, president of the Portuguese Textile and Clothing Association (ATP) praised DN / JN, and said, “Everything that introduces functionalities into fabrics, whether in the health or sports fields, for example, is differentiating and has more value in the market.”
The TNT from Ovar company could be used to fabricate different products, including facemask, disposable hygienic products, household cleaning stuff, hospital bedsheets, and medical gowns. Such innovative technology could save people from getting COVID-19 and other viruses.
