Payments to 3,428 garment workers, families approved by Central Fund

Foresightedness of Bangladesh planners to deduct 0.03 percent of the export proceeds from a Central Fund that is used to provide assistance to thousands of needy families of garment workers that died during duty, for medical treatment to injured workers.

The Fund also rewards meritorious children of apparel workers. Last week the Fund board in its 18th meeting approved an amount of 21.65 crores for compensation to A 3,428 workers employed in the 100 percent export-oriented garment industry. The fund is managed, by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

A sum of TK 146650000 would be provided as assistance to 491 workers employed by members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and 241 workers of member mills of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters. These workers either died in the line of duty or were permanently disabled. In addition, medical assistance of TK 56816000 will be provided to 2040 workers of BGMEA and BKMEA. Apparel is the mainstay of Bangladesh economy employing over 4 million workers majority of whom are women.

To encourage high-performing children of garment workers, Tk 13040,000 will be given as educational assistance to 652 meritorious children of workers.
