Pig Farming to be introduced in Xinjiang as the their cotton crop soil shows sign of infertility

After the ban placed by the U.S. on textile products coming in from Xinjiang that contain cotton which was soon followed by most big western countries as they boycotted China’s import over the forced labor allegations and ill-treatment of its ethnic Uighur Muslim minority, another issue has arisen which is of the declining quality of the soil and its infertility. Therefore, it is suggested by a government researcher that China should start building more pig farms in Xinjiang as the region’s cotton industry is already facing a threat.

Xinjiang is responsible for the growth of 80% of China’s cotton hence it is deemed the most profitable crop in the region, and rotation to other crops is not in the interests of growers and hard to achieve. large scale pig farms are already being built by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a military-affiliated entity, and other groups. Moreover, the waste coming for the animals will be used to as a fertilizer to treat the chemical ridden soil and bring back the soil’s fertility.

“The most desirable way to solve this problem is to raise pigs and grow cotton simultaneously, and return a large amount of manure from pig farms to the fields after treatment to enhance soil fertility and increase profits,” said Mei Xinyu, a think-tank researcher at the commerce ministry.
