Pink bollworms attack cotton crops in Northern India

The cotton crop in Northern parts of India, including the state of Punjab is facing threat of pink bollworm attacks.

According to media reports, the intensity of pink bollworm attacks is seen to be higher this season as against in the last two seasons.

The pink bollworm was seen towards the end of the last cotton season, but this time it has been noticed at the beginning of the season, thereby posing a threat to the cotton crops.

Cotton arrivals in Punjab in the 2022-23 marketing season (October to September) has been reported at 8.7 lakh quintals till August 16, or just one-third of the 28.89 lakh quintals for the full 2021-2022 marketing season.

Meanwhile, according to Indian government data, cotton acreage in the country stood at 116.75 hectares as on July 31, 2023, 1.16 percent lower as compared to 117.91 hectares recorded in the corresponding period last year.

While, cotton sowing goes in Gujarat state, which is India’s biggest cotton producing state has crossed the 26 lakh hectare mark, the highest in nine years.
