Suominen offers carbon neutral option to its North American Customers

Finnish nonwovens manufacturer, Suominen has announced that carbon-neutral Veocel lyocell fibers that were available in its European plants will now be available to its customers in North America.

Suominen has partnered with Lenzing, to use certified carbon-neutral Veocel lyocell fibers.

The expansion of carbon-neutral Veocel lyocell fibres in North America strengthened Suominen’s position as the leader in sustainable nonwovens a statement by the company said.

Suominen was the pioneer among nonwoven suppliers to start using carbon-neutral Veocel fibres in early 2022. Its use in nonwoven production will enable it to continue to build upon its existing range of sustainable products made from renewable raw materials having a smaller carbon footprint.



The company statement further stated that its strategy is centered on sustainability. Teaming up with other industry experts helped Suominen to fulfill its aim to become the frontrunner for nonwoven innovation and sustainability.

Carbon neutrality means that the greenhouse gas emissions generated from the product are first calculated, then reduced where possible, and lastly, unavoidable emissions are compensated via certified carbon offset projects.

The amount of compensation needs to be at least the same volume as the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

Lenzing’s Veocel fibers lower carbon footprint by 30 percent compared to the group average for lyocell fibers.

The remaining emissions need to be compensated through the support of verified carbon offset projects.
