The OnceMore process: A mixture of wood pulp and textile waste

Sodra, a Swedish company, is the creator of the OnceMore pulp process that combines wood pulp with up to 50% textile waste to create a pure, high-quality dissolving pulp that can be used to produce new clothing other textile products.

Sodra has now teamed up with Lenzing to transfer knowledge that has been proactively driving the circular economy many years and following joint development and a capacity expansion. OnceMore Pulp will be used as a raw material for the production of Lenzing’s Tencel x Refibra branded specialty fibers.  The two companies aim to turn an annual 25,000 tons of textile waste per year into a new product by 2025.

Lotta Lyra, President and CEO of Sodra, said, “With OnceMore pulp, Södra has created a globally unique solution for basing textiles on a recycled source. By joining forces with Lenzing, we will bring world-class recycling to the textile value chain. We will also increase our production capacity for OnceMore pulp ten-fold during 2022 and have a higher level of recycled textile content through a new investment. These are important steps towards our long-term target of creating a circular textile industry.”

Our OnceMore® pulp is a high alpha-cellulose pulp for textile applications. It combines excellent processability with high brightness, and it is equal to our dissolving pulp used for viscose and lyocell production when it comes to purity, quality, and properties.
