The ZDHC Foundation has introduced its latest innovation, the Air Emissions Module, designed to help the textile, leather, and footwear industries measure, monitor, and reduce harmful emissions. This tool focuses on both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs), supporting the sector’s efforts to lower its environmental footprint.
Using a methodology based on Potential to Emit (PTE) for VOCs and Scope 1 and 2 calculations for GHGs, the module allows users to convert existing data such as chemical inventories and energy usage into meaningful insights.
These insights can be used to benchmark performance, identify high-emission inputs, and phase out harmful substances while aligning with global sustainability frameworks and climate targets.
For brands, the module offers clear benefits such as supplier performance categorisation based on emissions, comparable GHG data for target setting, and support in driving engagement with their supply chain. Suppliers, on the other hand, gain a practical and cost-effective solution that avoids the need for expensive testing. The tool helps them identify high VOC-emitting chemicals, define decarbonisation strategies, and track progress over time.
This launch builds on ZDHC’s Air Emissions Guidelines released last year, which set industry-wide performance criteria for VOC and GHG management. Together, these initiatives provide a comprehensive framework for tackling air emissions, advancing circular fashion, and promoting more sustainable industry practices.
