The European Apparel and Textile Confederation (EURATEX) highlighted some advantages and disadvantages of the EPR system.
EPR system aims to ensure that producers contribute financially to the costs of waste management.
EURATEX has mentioned that the EPR system is based on economic models.
These systems successfully implement waste management in various sectors such as packaging, vehicles, electrical and electronic equipment. However, for Textile related value chains, EPR does not provide a sustainable solution or boost the circular economy.
EURATEX has recommended the following amendments to the EPR system for textiles
– EPR should be designed to support circularity
-EPR should value different Textiles
-EPR should solve real problems
-No contradictions in EPR schemes for textiles across the EU
-There should be an agreement for a single Eco-modulation concept
-EPRs scheme should not bear detrimental unintended consequences
-EPR should enable CE through cooperation and shared responsibility
