Themed Celebrating Textiles: A Journey, the 8th Asean symposium, starts in Malaysia with over 300 textile artists, artisans, and weavers from Asean countries and other regions. The symposium hosted by Malaysia is held from Sept 25 to 30 at Marriott Hotel Putrajaya.
The Asean Traditional Textile Symposium started in 2005 where Indonesia was the first organizer and continued again in the Philippines in 2009, Malaysia (2011), Vietnam (2013), Thailand (2015), Brunei (2017), and the last time in Indonesia (2019).
19 paperwork will be presented by 13 countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Canada, Laos, the Philippines, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The event has been officiated by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Monday (Sept 26).
Her Majesty Queen Azizah of Malaysia, a recipient of the “Craft Icon of the Year” Award by Craft Village in New Delhi, India (an active member of the World Crafts Council Asia Pacific Region), is the Patron of the 8th. There will be supporting events, such as exhibitions in a myriad of textiles, demonstrations on crafts-making, and ultimately, sales of handicrafts from all participating ASEAN countries will be made available. A series of field trips to the National Craft Institute, Kuala Lumpur Crafts Complex, and the National Textile Museum have also been scheduled for the participants during their tenure in Putrajaya.
